STAYING ACCOUNTABLE
At Learning A-Z, we understand that educational institutions throughout Canada are focused on meeting the needs of all students and educators with regards to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
As your partner in education, we share the belief that the inclusion of all perspectives in educational content holds even more urgency in light of the racial injustices that have come to the forefront in Canada, and worldwide, the disparities magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the global economic effects that are beginning to take hold around the world.
Education is the cornerstone of change and we are committed to providing culturally inclusive resources that serve teachers, students, and families of all backgrounds in classrooms and homes around the globe.
We are fully dedicated to building cultural awareness, understanding, and respect through thoughtfully developed instructional resources and, as a result, have significantly increased our investment in equity in education over the last few years. We are adding our voice to the efforts that you and others throughout Canada are making. Here are some of the Learning A-Z diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives that are the priority for every department and team member in our organisation:
● The engagement of independent expert advisors, as well as a Culturally Dynamic Content Advisory Board, composed of community organisers, educators, researchers, parent advocates, counsellors, writers, and artists who guide our internal DEI Council in the development of resources. Advisors include experts in indigenous education, culturally inclusive education, social emotional learning, and special education, as well as advocates for children with differing abilities.
- The ongoing, extensive review and update of legacy content (now in the third year of review) by our external advisors to ensure resources are culturally inclusive and representative of the students we serve.
- One example is the launch of Meaningful Conversations, a new SEL resource within Raz-Plus, that was born out of important social and racial justice conversations. This resource fully supports teachers in facilitating classroom conversations on important, and sometimes difficult, topics such as immigration, racism, and bullying.
- Continue to serve our multicultural community of learners with new and updated solutions which include ELL and world-language as well as our extensive French language collection that is supported with audio by Canadian French language speakers.
- An ongoing collaboration with UNICEF Kid Power that enables students to donate the stars they earn on our platform and convert them into real-world support for communities in need, empowering students to participate in social justice initiatives and make a global impact. We are thrilled to share that a Toronto, Ontario classroom is the 2022 winner of the Learning A-Z Classroom Donation Challenge!
In addition to these ongoing activities, we are investing in the research and creation of Indigenous Peoples’, First Nation, Métis, and Inuit resources and consulting with educators and researchers focused on culturally relevant pedagogy and culturally inclusive schooling based in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Between the global pandemic that has changed the landscape of education and the cultural reckoning with systemic injustice we are taking actions to best support the diverse communities we serve and develop better equity both in terms of accessibility and instructional methods.
