The primary responsibility of the Director of Professional Development is to manage pre-sales consulting, post-sales professional development, curriculum as a service, and curriculum consultant services for customers. The responsibility of the Director of Professional Development is to be well trained on Learning A-Z products and current in best practices in professional development, literacy and general instruction. The Director of Professional Development contributes significantly to domain expertise and works collaboratively with others. In this role, it is necessary to work with a wide variety of people internally and externally to advance the efforts of post-sales training and professional development. The role will also oversee pre-sales/pre-renewal efforts for large district pilots, and curriculum consultant activities. The role includes collaborating with management, editorial, development, sales representatives, and contract workers to ensure all professional development programs meet high standards of quality and customer satisfaction.

Essential Job Functions

  • Development
    • Develop and review custom and standard professional development packages including pricing, presentations, handouts, exercises, and other resource materials and train staff in these areas
    • Cultivate relationships with contractors, Sales Account Representatives, departmental managers, and customers
    • Respond to specific professional development and curriculum as a service inquiries, interview potential clients to assess needs and market services
    • Collaborate with bids and contracts, sales and marketing teams on writing of RFPs and large district initiatives
    • Further develop curriculum as a service offering into distinct paid for service
  • Professional Development Services
    • Develop and oversee procedures for contacting customers, dissemination of training information, and scheduling of PD events
    • Organize preparation and shipping of implementation training materials
    • Prepare and review online evaluations for all PD sessions to provide appropriate personnel with feedback
    • Supervise systems and maintenance of files pertaining to training contracts and sessions scheduled, including customer contact, participation lists, event reports, and evaluations
  • Presenting
    • Conduct full day and half day active learning on-site professional development sessions for key accounts as needed
    • Coordinate with Product Managers, Marketing and Sales Operations/Training team to present training to sales team and other LAZ associates as needed
    • Prepare and present updates and information to management team at Operations, national sales meetings and other management meetings
  • Supervision and Management
    • Recruit, hire, train and support Sr PD Managers, PD Managers, PD Specialists, National Curriculum Consultants, and contract PD Specialists as needed
    • Approve travel arrangements and contractor expenses for all team members
    • Actively participate in Operations Meetings, trainings and other team-learning activities as requested
    • Manage departmental budget
    • Provide a check and balance system to ensure that all aspects to measure professional development and/or program quality are conducted, submitted and reported
    • Travel with, observe and evaluate team members during presentations

Additional Job Functions

  • Maintain product knowledge
  • Remain abreast of best-practice in domain specific professional organizations
  • Coordinate with Sr PD Managers to maintain overall training calendars to assign trainers and maintain balance of responsibilities
  • Support reference sites and pilots as identified to demonstrate product efficacy
  • Model the language of the post-sales Services Continuum both internally and externally
  • Collaborate with other departments (product management, product development, etc.)
  • Collaborate with management and development to promote growth of and refine services based on consultant feedback, professional development, customer feedback, and research
  • Collaborate with Sales Leadership to support the sales process
  • Collaborate with Customer Success leaders to support overall customer experience
  • Willingness to travel, roughly 50% of time

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Field of Education
  • 10 years classroom teaching experience at elementary level
  • Experience developing and leading professional development sessions in education setting
  • Experience managing Professional Development department
  • Excellent training/presentation skills using adult learning concepts
  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent problem solving and stress management skills
  • Excellent public speaking and large group facilitation skills
  • Basic computer literacy specifically with Microsoft Office and Salesforce.com
  • Ability to be part of a small and large, collaborative work team
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule including some weekend and evening work as well as some travel

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  • Degree or specific training in reading and early literacy development
  • Familiarity with Learning A-Z products
  • Knowledge of webinar delivery tools
  • Knowledge of current best practice and theory in adult learning
