In 2020, students in the United States participated in the Learning A-Z/UNICEF Classroom Challenge, donating more than half a billion stars and delivering almost 90,000 meals to hungry families. This year, students will be challenged once again!
Starting in March, students around the world will have the exciting opportunity to read and earn stars, which they can turn into more meals and clean water for needy families and communities. The Learning A-Z/UNICEF Classroom Challenge is an amazing way to engage students in reading while enabling them to make a positive impact on the world around them.
Wow! We have now surpassed our extended goal of 300,000 donations. Guess what? We're so impressed, we've extended our goal again! We’re expanding our scope to keep this project going, with a new goal of 400,000 donations. Can you help us get there? We’d love it if you and your students could be part of this exciting project, helping families and communities in need. Keep reading. Keep earning stars. Keep donating healthy meals and clean drinking water – and keep making a BIG impact!

If you’ve turned off the “incentives” option in the past, but now want your students to be able to earn stars and contribute, just turn “incentives” back on, and you’ll be able to include your classroom in this donation event.
From March 5 to April 30, 2021, Learning A-Z students everywhere* will be able to donate stars to help others, until we reach our goal of 100,000 donations**. In the United States, Learning A-Z students can donate meals to hungry U.S. families. Throughout the world, Learning A-Z students outside the U.S. can donate clean drinking water to families and communities that need it most around the globe. (One student’s donation will provide 10 days of clean drinking water, while one mega donation will provide a full month of clean drinking water.)
*Only available for current customers of Kids A-Z, Raz-Plus, Raz-Kids, Vocabulary A-Z, Writing A-Z, Science A-Z, and Headsprout.
**We're so impressed with the generosity shown by students this past week, we've decided to extend the goal beyond our original limit of 100,000 donations!
“Giving students a greater sense of purpose increases their engagement and motivates them to reach new heights in their learning. We’re thrilled to see the learning gains and the impact students made last fall, and we’re excited to partner with UNICEF Kid Power to give students an opportunity to make a difference again this spring.”
~ Lisa O’Masta, president of Learning A-Z
And new this year: our classroom challenge will award the classroom donating the most stars with the opportunity to co-author a book for Learning A-Z! We’ll publish the book you write and share it with the 11 million students we serve around the world. See rules and eligibility.
UNICEF Kid Power® is a free UNICEF USA program that offers interactive videos to help children discover how their everyday activities—such as moving and learning—can make a difference in the world. To learn more, visit www.UNICEFKidPower.org.
“These are kids helping other kids, which is very rewarding for students. Some students don’t believe they can be in a position to help others, so when they get to really experience that, they’re truly empowered.”
~ Troy Hickerson, co-founder of UNICEF Kid Power
Bring a sense of purpose to your students, easily creating opportunities for them to create a positive impact and help others regardless of their economic background. It’s also a great new way for educators to motivate students to read and increase engagement. Last year, students read 10% more during the donation period. Let’s see what happens this year! We can’t wait to watch the donations add up, because each donation means students are reading more while they help needy families.
